The NVQ Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision course is a work-based learning qualification enabling you to work as a work supervisor in the construction industry. As a supervisor you will ,co-ordinate and organise work such as building projects, plan work activities and resources, whilst maintaining good occupational working relationships. You will also learn implementation and monitoring of health and safety in the workplace and how to implement safe and healthy working practices. It is ideal if you are working in construction and are required to supervise the work of others. The qualification contains 5 mandatory units and 6 optional units. You pick 2 optional units out of 6 units, allowing you to specialise in areas specific to your job role.


There are no entry requirements for this qualification – anyone over the age of 16 seeking to demonstrate competence in occupational work supervision can take this qualification. It is an ideal qualification if you hold other level 2 construction qualifications such as a Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying or Plastering or a level 2 Certificate in Construction Operations and wish to attain a level 3 qualification to supervise the work of others in the construction industry.

Course Content

The learner is assessed on site through a range of methods such as observations, evidence generated from the workplace, written questions, witness testimonials and professional discussion. The compulsory course structure includes the below mandatory units:

  • Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area in the workplace
  • Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
  • Confirming the occupational method of work in the workplace
  • Co-ordinating and organising work operations in the workplace

The learner must complete two of the three optional units listed below as well as the mandatory units:

  • Allocating and monitoring the use of plant, machinery or equipment in the workplace
  • Monitoring progress of work against schedules in the workplace
  • Contributing to the circulation of construction related project information in the workplace


Why take this qualification?

If you are currently employed or have previously been employed in the construction industry and are required to supervise the work of others, the NVQ Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision qualification will enable you to demonstrate your ability to work safely and competently to a recognised national standard. NVQ Diplomas can teach advanced skills and gain you employment, however many large construction sites require the NVQ to demonstrate you are able to work safely and competently onsite.


What can this qualification lead to?

This qualification prepares you for work at supervisory level in construction, with specific focus on work supervision. Upon completion you can apply to CSCS, or other industry card schemes, to gain a recognised skills card. If you wish to progress to become a site supervisor or manager working on site, you may wish to study any of the following qualifications.
