Which CSCS Card Do I Need?

If you’re in the construction industry, chances are you’ve heard of CSCS and the card that you need to get on-site. However, you probably haven’t heard about how to get the CSCS card, which is one of the biggest questions that we get asked. That’s why we’ve made this guide on what card you need and how you get it, with more detail about why you need it.

How Do I Apply?

To apply for a CSCS card, you must first, email your evidence to CSCS on [email protected] Once you have emailed your valid evidence for the card type you need, you must then call CSCS on 0344 994 4777. You will then be able to show your evidence to them from the email and proceed with payment over the phone.

Labourer (Green CSCS Card)

Green CSCS Card

The Green Labourer Card is the basic construction worker card. This card will allow you to get onto a construction site and get into work. This card proves that you have the necessary awareness of health and safety. This card is required by most sites so if you are considering joining the construction industry, obtaining this card should be one of your first steps.

How do I get it?

To get your Green Labourer Card you must have:

  • Completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Passed a Level 1 Health and Safety course such as IOSH Working Safely.

Apprentice Card

Apprentice CSCS Card

This card is designed for anyone on a construction apprenticeship and it is valid for 4 years and 6 months. This card is non-renewable as it is designed to be used whilst on your apprenticeship. This card will allow you onto a building site in order to complete your apprenticeship.

How do I get it?

To get your Apprentice Card you must prove that you:

  • Are enrolled in an apprenticeship in the form of a document.
  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.

Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager Card

Experienced Supervisor CSCS Card

This is a temporary CSCS card designed for supervisors, managers and technical workers who are registered onto an NVQ Level 3 or higher. This card is meant to provide workers who are completing an NVQ, access to construction sites so that they are able to complete their NVQ.

How do I get it?

To get your Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Prove that you are registered on an NVQ Level 3 or higher.
  • Not have achieved an NVQ Level 3 or higher already.
  • Not be a member of a professional body.

Experienced Worker Card

Experienced Worker Card

This card is similar to the Experienced Technical, Supervisor or Manager Card, except it requires you to be enrolled onto an NVQ Level 2 or higher. It is designed to be a card similar to the previous card however you will be able to apply for it at a lower level NVQ that is recognised by CSCS.

How do I get it?

To get your Experienced Worker Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Prove that you are registered on an NVQ Level 2 or higher.

Trainee Card

Trainee Card

This is another temporary card that is designed for workers who are trainees and on a construction related qualification. The qualification can be for academic, professional or even vocational purposes as long as it is recognised by CSCS. SMSTS, SSSTS and NEBOSH General certificates are not accepted for this card.

How do I get it?

To get your Trainee Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Be enrolled in a construction-related qualification that is eligible for CSCS.

Skilled Worker (Blue CSCS Card)

Skilled Worker Blue CSCS Card

This CSCS Card is a 5-year card that can be renewed by calling CSCS and paying a £36 renewal fee. This card requires an NVQ Level 2 which means that unlike the green labourer card, the qualification won’t expire which may happen, depending on the qualification used to obtain the green labourer card. This means that you can renew your Blue CSCS card as soon as it expires.

How do I get it?

To get your Blue CSCS Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Have an NVQ Level 2 that is recognised for CSCS cards.

Advanced Craft Card

Advanced Craft

This CSCS card is another one that lasts 5 years with the option to renew it every time it expires. This card is designed for people who have completed a Level 3 NVQ or an apprenticeship with an approved governing body and are skilled in a specific trade.

How do I get it?

To get your Advanced Craft CSCS Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Have an NVQ Level 3 that is recognised for CSCS cards.

Or

  • Have completed an approved indentured apprenticeship or an employer-sponsored apprenticeship with the achievement of a City & Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

Supervisor Card (Gold CSCS Card)

Supervisor Gold CSCS Card

The Gold CSCS Card is a card designed for supervisors. If you are supervising a “gang”/ you are a “ganger”. This means that you are competent enough to supervise a specific trade worker group. This card requires an NVQ in supervision.

How do I get it?

To get your Supervisor CSCS Card you must:

Manager Card (Black CSCS Card)

Manager CSCS Card Black

This card is designed for managers of a construction site. Whether you are managing the whole site or just managing a part of the workforce, you should look at acquiring this card.

How do I get it?

To get your Manager CSCS Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Have a construction management NVQ Level 5, 6 or 7 or hold a pre-existing NVQ Level 4 in management related to construction.

Academically Qualified Person (White CSCS Card)

Academically Qualified Person White

This card has been designed for construction workers who have completed degrees, HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates and NEBOSH diplomas. This is for people who have not entered construction in the traditional way through NVQs.

How do I get it?

To get your Academically Qualified Person CSCS Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • Have completed a degree HND, HNC, CIOB Certificate or NEBOSH diplomas in construction-related achievements.

Professionally Qualified Person Card

Professionally Qualified Person

This card is for workers who are members of professional bodies. The card does not require any sort of qualifications other than proof of membership of a professionally recognised body and a Health Safety and environment test for managers and professionals.

How do I get it?

To get your Professionally Qualified Person CSCS Card you must:

  • Have completed the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test within the last 2 years.
  • A membership certificate from the professional body recognised by CSCS.
