Entry Requirements

If the delegates are to attend the practical course, they will require to bring with them their FFP3 masks that have been face fit tested.

Successful candidates will receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, which is issued on completion. This is valid for 5 years. Please note that there is no physical ‘SSSTS Card’, however, you can list your Site Safety Plus certificate qualification when applying for further qualifications.

If you have already passed the 2-day CITB SSSTS course and need to renew your CITB certificate, you will be eligible for the 1-day SSSTS refresher, providing your certificate is still in date and valid.

The 2 day CITB SMSTS Refresher Training course is designed for candidates who have already passed the SMSTS Course. All SMSTS certificates are valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Candidates will be required to show their original 5 day certificate and if known provide details of where and when they took the course. Delegates MUST attend both days in order to obtain their certification.

By attending the SMSTS refresher course delegates will be updated on developments in construction legislation and use of appropriate best practice. The course will also enhance existing managerial skills necessary to achieve compliance with any new legal duties and responsibilities placed on them and their workforce.

Important Information

Training courses in this category are designed for Supervisors and Operatives who are required to carry out their duties to the standards prescribed by City & Guilds in-line with the New Roads and Street Works Act, current legislation, and applicable Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP’s).

Training courses for NRSWA will cover one or more units dependent on requirements as explained below.

Training courses within this category relate to the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA). The NRSWA sets out the procedures and guidelines for personnel employed by local authorities, utilities companies and their contractors for the purpose of any road works in the highway or on footpaths. The Act and associated Codes of Practice cover issues such as, the notification requirements, safety to highway users and the standards required of the reinstatement of all excavations on the highway, standards for signing, lighting and guarding, etc.

If you have successfully completed an NRSWA Operative Course and then carry out an NRSWA Supervisor course at a later date, or vice versa, you will be issued with a dual card, but this dual card will have an expiry date for the course that was completed first.

For example, you complete an operative course with a five year expiry, and then a year later you complete a supervisor course, the dual card issued by SWQR will have an expiry date of five years from the operative course which has the earliest expiry date, not the expiry date of the supervisor course.

If you wish to obtain a full 5 year card rather than a dual card for a qualification you will need to contact SWQR on 0345 213 5000 prior to taking a course to inform them that you wish to forfeit the original qualification.

Face Fit training courses are typically half a day in duration and teach candidates about different masks available, how to choose the appropriate mask to wear and common faults and failures of protective equipment.

Face Fit Train the Trainer courses are typically a day in duration and teach candidates to be the competent person on site who can teach their colleagues how to select and use the appropriate RPE.

Employers have a legal responsibility to supply employees with Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) if a COSHH assessment of the workplace deems it necessary. Employers must provide suitable protection if their employees are at risk of inhaling anything which could affect their health including; asbestos spores, contaminated air, chemicals, gases, other hazardous substances or when entering a confined space.

REP is typically only provided for short term use and in line with other control measures, for example, exhaust ventilation systems. The reason being is that RPE can lead to communication or visual issues and has proven to be uncomfortable to wear for long durations. Workers who have to use this kind of equipment must remain clean shaven in order to ensure that the masks fit closely to the skin to avoid any potential leaks. If an employee has facial hair for a religious reason, alternative forms of RPE are available.

Participant Requirements

Delegates do not require any previous experience working with CAT and Genny or any other cable avoidance equipment. However, it is necessary to be able to read and understand manufacturer guidelines as well as utility plans and safety signs. This means that a good level of English literacy is important.

Delegates are also advised to bring safety gear, usually provided by the company they work for, and if there is a specific model of Radiodetection Cat 4 equipment that you will be using, you can bring this and our tutors will use this equipment during the course.
