NRSWA street works training for operatives and supervisors
Get the training and assessment relevant to the street works you carry out. Our NRSWA course options cover operative and supervisor certificates for signing, lighting and guarding, excavation, and reinstatement.

Which certificates do you need?
NRSWA street works qualifications comprise 16 individual certificates: LA, O1–O8 for operatives and S1–S7 for supervisors. You need the key certificates for your role, plus the certificates relevant to the work you carry out or supervise.
LA – Location and avoidance of underground apparatus is a key certificate for both roles.
Operative certificates
Operatives carrying out excavation or reinstatement work need LA and O1, plus the relevant O-series certificates:
- O1 – Signing, lighting and guarding (key certificate)
- O2 – Excavation in the highway
- O3 – Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
- O4 – Reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
- O5 – Reinstatement in cold-lay bituminous materials
- O6 – Reinstatement in hot-lay bituminous materials
- O7 – Reinstatement of concrete slabs
- O8 – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
Supervisor certificates
Supervisors overseeing excavation or reinstatement work need LA and S1, plus the relevant S-series certificates:
- S1 – Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding (key certificate)
- S2 – Monitoring excavation in the highway
- S3 – Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
- S4 – Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
- S5 – Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials
- S6 – Monitoring reinstatement of concrete slabs
- S7 – Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
Course requirements
You do not need an existing street works qualification to take initial assessments. Assessments are conducted in English. To obtain an SWQR card, you must pass the assessments for the certificates you need at an approved centre.
If you already have an SWQR card, provide your current certificate details when you enquire so we can advise on additional assessments or reassessment. You may also be asked for a passport-style photograph for your card application.
Holding both operative and supervisor qualifications
You can hold operative and supervisor certificates on a combined Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card, provided you have passed the relevant assessments for both roles. A supervisor qualification alone does not qualify you to work as an operative.
On cards issued under the England and Scotland system, each certificate has its own expiry date. Check your certificate dates and arrange reassessment when required to keep the qualifications you need valid.
