A telehandler (also known as a telescopic handler) is a powerful machine commonly used in construction or agriculture. It is similar to a forklift but has a telescopic boom that can extend. It’s often fitted with different attachments and works better on uneven ground.

Because of its size and potential risk, operating a telehandler requires proper certification under regulations.

Licence vs certification: what’s required?

Scenario

Requirement

Additional Notes

Operating on a worksite (construction, agriculture)

Certification via a recognised training scheme

You do not need a driving licence for on-site operation. (SB Skills Solutions)

Operating on public roads

A valid driving licence (usually Category B) + vehicle registration, insurance

The telehandler must be registered and taxed; fork arms or attachments should be removed or secured. (SB Skills Solutions)

What licence is required for a telescopic handler?

For site-only operation, a driving licence is not required. What is needed is proof of competence through an accredited training course.

For road use, you will need a valid driving licence (typically Category B, which is the standard car licence) as well as registration and insurance for the vehicle.

The telehandler must also be properly registered. If used in agriculture, it should be registered as an agricultural vehicle; for construction, as a commercial vehicle.

.

Age limits based on vehicle weight (road use)

Up to 3.5 tonnes: you can drive from 17 years old

From 3.5 tonnes to 7.5 tonnes: minimum 18 years old

Over 7.5 tonnes: minimum 21 years old

How to get the required licence / certification

To drive on the road: obtain a full driving licence by passing both a theory test and a practical test via the DVLA.

To operate on-site: complete an accredited telesopic handler training course—for example, the NPORS telesopic handler training offered by SB Skills.

Courses include both theoretical and practical training to ensure safe operation.

Rules when driving a telehandler on public roads

When you do need to drive a telehandler on a road, follow these safety rules:

Never carry a load while driving on the road.

Remove or secure all lifting equipment and attachments.

Fold back or remove fork arms and ensure they are secured.

Comply with all Highway Code rules.

Equip the telehandler with appropriate lighting for road use.

If travelling under 25 mph on an unrestricted dual carriageway, use a flashing beacon.

For further help or advice with training, certification, or licences for operating and driving a telescopic handler, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team here at SB Skills Solutions by calling us on 01695 558 420 and we’ll be happy to help.

Concerned about the expiry of Industry Accreditation (IA) cards and what it means for your career in the construction industry?

If you are a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) IA card holder, understanding why these cards are being withdrawn and how you can prepare yourself is crucial to minimising disruption to your employment.

What is a CSCS industry accreditation card?

A CSCS industry accreditation card is simply a CSCS card that has been issued under Industry Accreditation, which is based on references from either employers or other competent individuals who can testify on behalf of the holder to their skills and experience within a certain role.

Why is industry accreditation (IA) being withdrawn?

According to official CSCS guidance, IA has been withdrawn as a route to obtaining a CSCS card to meet the Construction Leadership Council’s recommendations.

These recommendations state that “all construction industry card schemes must operate with nationally recognised qualifications in place for all occupations.”

As IA cards were issued on the strength of the employer’s or another competent individual’s recommendation rather than a recognised qualification, IA does not meet with these CLC recommendations.

The preference of qualification-based CSCS cards over the IA-issued alternative is to help improve the skills, safety, and efficiency of construction site workers.

What is changing? And when?

Before 2010, IA made workers eligible to apply for and renew a CSCS card.

Following the introduction of these new recommendations, IA CSCS cards issued from January 1 2020 will expire on December 31 2024 and cannot be renewed using IA.

To apply for a new CSCS card, workers will therefore be required to achieve a relevant NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) or equivalent accreditation.

At SB Skills Solutions, we provide training and assessment services for a wide range of work-based NVQs – from Level 2 to Level 7 NVQ.

Cardholder Scenarios

Not all CSCS card holders will need to apply for a new card – especially if you have moved to an office-based role or rarely attend construction sites.

However, for those who still hold site roles, you will need to obtain the relevant NVQ qualification.

Black manager card holders – Level 6 or 7 NVQ qualification

Gold supervisor card holders – Level 3 or 4 NVQ qualification

Gold skilled worker card holders – Level 3 NVQ qualification

Blue skilled worker card holders – Level 2 NVQ qualification

Contact SB Skills for NVQ qualification support

Does your CSCS card require renewal?

If you pursued the route of IA to previously achieve your CSCS card, then you will need to ensure that you have a recognised qualification before applying again.

Fortunately, the expert team of instructors and assessors at SB Skills Solutions can help you achieve a relevant NVQ qualification in the construction industry.

This nationally recognised qualification can function as your stepping stone to your CSCS card application or renewal.

Another essential test that applicants must pass to secure their CSCS card is the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Health, Safety & Environment Test.

As well as this test, we also provide a range of health and safety courses to support the competence of these workers.

To find out more about the contents of our health and safety or NVQ qualification courses, please feel free to contact the knowledgeable and experienced team of professionals at SB Skills Solutions.

Simply call 01695 558 420 for expert help choosing the right NVQ qualification for you.

We also welcome email enquiries sent to info@sbskills.co.uk and those submitted using our convenient online contact form.

Keen to increase your career opportunities within the construction industry?

By obtaining the right plant operator qualifications, you could become a fully qualified plant operator in the construction sector – playing a crucial role in the development of new builds, the creation of new road structures, and many other vital infrastructure projects.

Below, the knowledgeable team at SB Skills Solutions explains how you can become a construction plant operator – including the qualifications you should consider applying for.

What is a plant operator?

Unsure whether you want to take on the roles and responsibilities of a plant operator? While a plant operator can work in various industries, the position typically involves overseeing of the daily running of an industrial plant.

However, the primary responsibility of a plant operator, as the name suggests, is the operation of the plant’s heavy machinery. For example, a plant operator in the construction industry might operate machinery like ride-on-road rollers, crawler cranes, forward-tipping dumpers, and mini excavators.

As well as the construction industry, plant operator positions can also be found in power plants, chemical plants, oil refineries, wastewater treatment plants, gas extraction facilities, as well as a variety of other industrial, chemical, and nuclear locations.

The typical responsibilities of a plant operator include:

The supervision of operations

Monitoring process parameters

Conducting maintenance tests

Ensuring safety rules are followed

Operating heavy machinery and equipment

Transporting and storing various materials

How to become a plant operator

From applying for an apprenticeship to working your way up, there are various routes into the plant operator profession.

To help you understand your options and choose the right avenue for you, we explore some of the different ways that you can become a construction plant operator in more detail below.

College or training provider

When it comes to gaining qualifications, a college or training provider seems like the obvious place to start and there are two options you can consider.

This includes the Level 2 Certificate in Construction Plant Operations and the Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that on-site experience is also required to become a construction plant operator. As a result, after completing their training, applicants will typically take on a trainee position on a construction site to gain this vital experience.

To take a level 2 course, applicants will require 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), while those wishing to take a level 3 course will need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C). If you don’t possess any GCSEs, you’ll require an equivalent qualification.

Apprenticeship

For those who want to earn money at the same time as gaining a qualification from a college or training provider, an apprenticeship is often the best option.

Apprenticeships are typically more accessible and can be taken by all individuals over the age of 16. However, individuals may also need to possess some GCSEs (including maths and English) or an equivalent qualification to successfully apply for an apprenticeship.

Both construction plant operator intermediate apprenticeships and lifting technician intermediate apprenticeships can be helpful avenues into this profession.

Trade work

A common route into plant operation is simply working your way up. While you may need certain GCSE grades (in subjects like English, maths, and technology), employers in the construction industry are often willing to provide work as a general labourer with training opportunities.

Individuals with the necessary enthusiasm and work ethic can work towards obtaining the required plant operator skills and qualifications, while their employers offer them invaluable on-site experience with the operation and maintenance of heavy machinery and equipment.

Upon gaining enough construction industry experience, skills, and knowledge, your employer may decide to contact a training provider on your behalf to help you achieve the necessary plant operator qualifications.

What qualifications does a plant operator need?

While the exact qualifications you require for a plant operator position will vary depending on which industry you’re interested in, the team at SB Skills Solutions knows exactly which plant operator qualifications are required to get involved in the construction industry.

In England, you’ll need to achieve either your Level 2 NVQ (National Vocational Qualification – practical, work-based qualifications) in Construction Plant Operations, your Level 2 Construction Plant Operative Apprenticeship qualification, or your Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.

Once you’ve achieved one of these essential plant operator qualifications, you can then apply for your blue CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) Competence Card or your CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) accreditation – both of which can support you with securing work on a construction site as a plant operator.

Explore plant operator training courses at SB Skills Solutions

Keen to work your way up to a more advanced role in the construction industry? With a gold CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card under your belt, you can do exactly that.

Fortunately, the knowledgeable SB Skills Solutions team can help you understand what’s required to apply for your gold CSCS card. From the qualifications and accreditations to your skills and experience, we’ll ensure you have everything you need.

Plus, we’ll also explain how the recent changes made to the acceptance of IA (Industry Accreditation) in the construction industry could impact your ability to achieve and renew your gold CSCS card after 2024.

What is a CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card?

There are two types of gold CSCS cards – an Advanced Craft card and a Supervisor card. Here, we’ll focus on the Advanced Craft or Skilled Worker card.

This skilled worker card demonstrates that the cardholder has a high level of competence, experience, knowledge, and skills in their field of work. It shows that they can safely work in an advanced position in their respective construction industry field.

These cards are often provided to skilled tradespeople who might specialize in carpentry, plumbing, or electrical work, for example.

Valid for five years, they can be renewed six months prior to and up to six months after the card’s expiry date. Although workers and their employers are not legally required in the UK to hold a gold CSCS card to work in the construction industry roles mentioned above, they can be crucial.

While CSCS cards themselves aren’t a legal requirement, it is a legal requirement for all individuals working on a construction site to possess the necessary skills and experience to carry out their role safely. CSCS cards simply provide proof that this is the case.

Notably, a key requirement for obtaining a gold CSCS card is to pass the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) test at the relevant level.

This means many contractors won’t allow workers who don’t possess a valid gold CSCS card to work in an advanced position on-site due to health and safety concerns.

To ensure you don’t miss out on skilled job opportunities within the construction industry (alongside the experience and earning potential that comes with these roles), it’s well worth learning more about the gold CSCS card application requirements and process.

How Do You Get a CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card?

Luckily, applying for your gold CSCS card is relatively straightforward – all you need is the relevant qualification or accreditation for your occupation and the ability to apply online with CSCS.

Obtain the Necessary Qualifications or Accreditations

To be eligible to apply for your gold CSCS card, you must possess the required training in the form of either an accepted qualification or accreditation.

Based on information published by CSCS themselves, gold CSCS card applicants must hold either a construction-related Level 3 NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) or Level 6 SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification).

Alternatively, they must have completed an approved apprenticeship with the NJCBI (National Joint Council for the Engineering Construction Industry), BATJIC (Building and Allied Trades Joint Industrial Council), Institute of Apprenticeships, or another suitable provider.

Applicants will also be accepted if they have completed an employer-sponsored apprenticeship that included the achievement of a City and Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate.

All gold CSCS cardholders must also have successfully completed the CITB HS&E test at the appropriate level. As CSCS does not offer training courses for any of these qualifications, you will need to contact a qualified training provider, like SB Skills Solutions.

Offering training and assessment services for a range of Level 3 NVQ construction courses, we can help you work towards obtaining your gold CSCS card. For example, depending on your role, you could take a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Fenestration Installation, Roofing Occupations, or Cladding Occupations.

Get in touch today to learn more about these NVQ courses or our services!

Apply Online with CSCS

Once you’ve secured the necessary qualifications, you can apply online with CSCS for your gold skilled worker card. Simply log into your existing account or register as a new user to access the relevant gold CSCS card application form.

You must fill in the form as directed, provide a scanned copy of your qualification certificate, as well as a passport-style photo of yourself, and the test ID number from the top of your CITB HS&E test pass certificate. Please note, you will also need to pay a £36 application fee via debit or credit card.

As application requirements may vary depending on your specific circumstances, we recommend contacting CSCS directly if you’d like to learn more about this process.

What’s the New Equivalent Qualification to a CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card?

To obtain a gold CSCS card as a skilled worker, you must successfully complete a Level 3 NVQ (or SVQ) in a relevant advanced craft qualification or an approved apprenticeship. Find out more about which qualifications can help you achieve your gold CSCS card here.

Renewing a CSCS Gold Skilled Worker Card in the Future

Ready to renew your gold CSCS card? As these essential construction industry cards are only valid for five years, we recommend ensuring that there’ll be no issues when it’s time for you to renew yours.

To do this, you’ll need to check that the recent changes made to the way in which CSCS cards can be renewed don’t affect you.

Following suggestions from the CLC (Construction Leadership Council) to improve competence and safety in the construction industry, workers will no longer be able to renew their gold CSCS card using IA after 2024.

This means individuals won’t be able to rely on a reference from an employer (or another competent person) as recognition of their skills and experience. Instead, they’ll need to obtain a nationally recognized qualification if they want to apply for or renew their gold CSCS card after 31st December 2024.

If you don’t hold one of the aforementioned nationally recognized qualifications that would allow you to apply for a gold CSCS skilled worker card, then don’t worry. The knowledgeable team at SB Skills Solutions can help you obtain the necessary qualifications.

We provide a variety of Level 3 NVQ construction-related courses that can help you meet the requirements for applying for, or renewing, your gold CSCS card. For expert support choosing the most suitable NVQ course for you, please feel free to contact our team today!

Considering applying for your black CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card but in need of the relevant qualifications, experience, and skills first? Find out how you can achieve and apply for this essential card from the national training experts at SB Skills Solutions. We also explain the important recent changes made to the way in which some black CSCS cards can be renewed after 2024, which you should be aware of.

What is a CSCS Black Manager Card?

A black CSCS card, also known as the manager-level card, provides proof that the holder possesses the relevant knowledge, skills, and experience to work in a management position on a construction site.

As the highest CSCS card you can achieve, black CSCS cards are often used to become a construction site manager, but they can also help holders achieve other managerial positions such as a contracts manager, operations manager, or director.

These top-level cards are valid for five years and must be renewed after this period if you want to continue working in the same type of role and industry. However, if you’ve moved into an office-based role or no longer attend site regularly, you may no longer require a valid black CSCS card.

While not a legal requirement in the UK, many contractors will request that their workers hold a valid black CSCS card to work in a management role. As a result, if you don’t hold a valid black CSCS card, you could be denied access to the construction site or turned down for a manager’s position.

You may therefore want to consider applying for your black CSCS card if you aspire to move into a site managerial role or increase your earning potential.

How Do You Get a CSCS Black Manager Card?

Obtaining a black CSCS card typically involves just two steps: completing a relevant qualification for your occupation and applying online with CSCS.

Achieve the Required Qualifications or Accreditations

To apply for a black CSCS card, you must hold the necessary training, experience, and qualification or accreditation for the construction role you’re working in. According to CSCS, black CSCS card applicants should hold either an appropriate level of SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) or NVQ (National Vocational Qualification), or an acceptable form of overseas qualification.

The type of training you must successfully complete varies depending on your occupation. However, all black CSCS card applicants must also pass the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) test for managers and professionals.

CSCS does not provide training themselves, so you will need to get in touch with a qualified training provider. At SB Skills Solutions, we offer training assessment services for a variety of qualifications that can be used to obtain your black CSCS card. This includes the Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice, Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management, and Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management.

Please feel free to contact us today if you’d like to discuss your requirements or have any questions about our services.

Apply Online with CSCS

After achieving the relevant qualifications or accreditations, simply head online to the official CSCS website to apply for your black CSCS card. Once you’ve logged into your existing account or registered as a new user, there will be an online application form for your black CSCS card that you should fill in as directed.

You’ll also be asked to provide a scanned copy of your qualification certificate, a passport-style photo of yourself to prove your identity, and the test ID number from the top of your CITB HS&E test pass certificate. After paying the CSCS card application fee of £36 via debit or credit card and supplying information about your current role in the construction industry, you should have provided CSCS with everything they need.

However, application requirements may vary depending on your specific circumstances, so if you require up-to-date guidance or help applying for your black CSCS card, please speak directly to CSCS.

What’s the New Equivalent Qualification to a CSCS Black Manager Card?

To apply for a black CSCS card, you must successfully complete a Level 4, 5, 6, or 7 NVQ or SVQ in a relevant construction management qualification. Learn more about which qualifications are relevant for different black CSCS card occupations here.

Renewing a CSCS Black Manager Card in the Future

As black CSCS cards are only valid for five years, it’s important to ensure your card doesn’t expire when you need it most. However, checking that you possess the right type of qualification for your current occupation is essential to ensure a smooth renewal process.

This is due to the recent changes made to the CSCS card renewal process whereby construction industry workers will no longer be allowed to renew their black CSCS card using Industry Accreditation (IA) after 2024.

As per the guidance from the CLC (Construction Leadership Council), there should be nationally recognized qualifications in place for all occupations instead. These changes impact all black CSCS cardholders that currently possess IA cards and want to renew their CSCS card after 31st December 2024.

Previously, IA meant that construction workers could obtain a CSCS card based on a reference from an employer or another competent individual. These changes were made to ensure construction workers meet industry requirements and can competently and safely perform their role.

Fortunately, there are numerous other types of relevant qualifications and accreditations that you can obtain to help you apply for or renew your black CSCS card, including academic qualifications, professional body membership, as well as the SVQ or NVQ route.

If you previously obtained your black CSCS card using IA and therefore don’t currently hold any of the necessary qualifications or accreditations to renew your card, our experienced national training instructors can help. At SB Skills Solutions, we offer assessment services for a variety of recognized courses that can help you to obtain your black CSCS card – a card that is often essential for moving up in the construction industry and increasing your earning potential.

The courses available at SB Skills Solutions include a Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice, Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management, and Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management. Our team of national training instructors has the experience and knowledge to guide you through the process of achieving the qualification you need. Upon successful completion of the necessary NVQ course, you will be able to apply for your black CSCS card.

Alternatively, you may not even need to renew your black CSCS card if you’ve moved into an office-based role or no longer regularly attend the site.

Still unsure which qualification you should take following the recent IA CSCS card renewal changes? Contact our professional team today to receive expert advice from our fully qualified trainers and assessors.

How SB Skills Can Help

Alongside helping you to achieve your black CSCS card, we also offer assessment services for a range of other courses.

Keen to get your hands on a CSCS card, but concerned about the cost?

While there are various costs associated with obtaining a CSCS card, these cards can be essential to broadening your job opportunities, increasing your earning potential, and progressing your career in the construction industry.

To help you understand how much your CSCS card is likely to cost, the expert team of assessors at SB Skills Solutions have provided a comprehensive breakdown of all the CSCS card-related fees you should be aware of.

From the price of the card itself to different costs involved in achieving the training and qualifications needed to apply for the card, we cover them all in more detail below.

How much is a CSCS card in the UK?

The fee for applying for a CSCS card in the UK is £36 – regardless of which colour card you’re interested in obtaining. However, this is just the application fee.

You should also take into consideration the cost of any additional qualifications you’ll need to apply for a CSCS card. This includes the £22.50 cost of taking the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test as well as the cost of any training courses that are required.

This means the total cost for obtaining a CSCS card in the UK is £58.50. However, this is before you take into account any training fees.

How much does a CSCS exam cost?

Naturally, if you don’t currently possess the necessary qualifications or accreditations to apply for your desired CSCS card, then you will need to consider the cost of any essential training needed to help you achieve these CSCS card pre-requisites, too.

At SB Skills Solutions, we provide high-quality training and assessment services for a wide range of work-based NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) that can be used to obtain a variety of CSCS cards.

As there are 13 CSCS cards in total, each CSCS card will have different qualification and accreditation requirements, it’s important to understand which level NVQ or SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification) you need to help you obtain your desired CSCS card.

For example, if you want to achieve your blue CSCS card, then you may want to consider taking a relevant NVQ level 2 in construction, whereas black CSCS card holders are required to pass a level 5, 6, or 7 NVQ that relates to their role.

Naturally, the cost of the CSCS exam you need to take will therefore vary depending on the type of training you require, the number of applicants, the level of the NVQ, and the training provider.

For a more accurate idea of how much the training and assessment of your required CSCS course will cost, please don’t hesitate to contact the friendly team of instructors at SB Skills Solutions.

Can I get a CSCS card for free?

The only CSCS card that is issued for free is the CSCS Apprentice card. Supplied to individuals on recognised apprenticeships, this card is valid for four years and six months, but it cannot be renewed after this period.

This is because cardholders are expected to have completed their apprenticeship in this time and be able to apply for the next level of CSCS card.

No other CSCS cards can obtained for free as they all require some degree of training, assessment, and administration. You should therefore be careful not to be drawn in by any offers for free CSCS cards as they could come with hidden charges or a sub-par service.

However, there are ways that you can make achieving your desired CSCS card more affordable. At SB Skills Solutions, for example, alongside our competitive course prices, you can also apply for fully funded training or a CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) short qualification grant.

Not to mention, following the recent move to transition all Industry Accreditation (IA) CSCS cardholders to a recognised qualification (IA CSCS cardholders will no longer be able to renew after 2024 without a recognised qualification and new applicants won’t be able to apply using IA), the CITB is now offering increased grants.

As of April 2023, CITB’s grant for specific supervision NVQ and SVQ diplomas has been increased to £1,250, while the grant for specific management NVQ and SVQ diplomas has also been increased to £1,500. Find out whether your course is eligible for a CITB grant here.

Is a CSCS card worth it?

Put simply, yes. CSCS cards are often essential for construction industry workers as they’re widely used to demonstrate that the holder possesses the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to work safely and competently in their construction site role.

Although CSCS cards aren’t a legal requirement in the UK, many contractors and their clients will request that site workers hold the relevant CSCS card for greater reassurance in their abilities and performance.

As a result, deciding not to apply for your CSCS card could have massive implications for your job opportunities and earning potential. Typically, the amount spent on obtaining your CSCS card will be worth it to help start or progress your career in the construction industry.

Most CSCS cards are also valid for five years, so you won’t need to worry about annual renewal costs building up either.

Obtain the qualifications you need for a CSCS card

Now you have a better understanding of how much it’s going to cost to obtain a CSCS card, why not let the qualified team of training providers and assessors at SB Skills Solutions help?

After learning more about your current construction industry role, experience, and qualifications, our knowledgeable and fully accredited team can help you to explore relevant CSCS training courses related to the type of CSCS card you want to achieve.

Unsure whether you possess the relevant qualifications to apply for, or renew, your white CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card?

Fortunately, the national training and assessment experts at SB Skills Solutions are here to help. Below, we explain exactly what’s required to apply for a white CSCS card and how you can get your hands on one.

Plus, if you’re concerned about the recent Industry Accreditation (IA) CSCS card changes, our knowledgeable team can help you to understand and navigate these new rules, too.

What is a CSCS white card?

There are two different types of CSCS card that are referred to as ‘white cards’ due to their colour – the Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card and the Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) card.

Both cards are valid for five years.

Academically Qualified Person white CSCS card

An AQP CSCS card demonstrates that the holder possesses an acceptable form of high-level construction-related academic qualification. This allowing them the opportunity to work on a construction site.

From here, the cardholder will then be able to train for a relevant NVQ (National Vocational Qualification).

Professionally Qualified Person white CSCS card

Unlike AQP cardholders, PQP cardholders can use their professional body membership to obtain credibility and recognition for their construction industry skills and knowledge, rather than achieving an NVQ or other equivalent qualification.

A PQP CSCS card can only be obtained by members of a CSCS-approved professional body, such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

These cards are valid for five years but cannot be renewed at the end of this period. Instead, you must apply for a new PQP card.

What qualification do I need to obtain a CSCS white card?

The type of qualification you need to apply for a white CSCS card depends on whether you explore the academic or professional route. Simply carry on reading to find out which qualifications and accreditations can be used to apply for each one below.

Academically Qualified Person white CSCS card

To be eligible for an AQP card, the applicant must possess a degree, HND (Higher National Diploma), HNC (Higher National Certificate), CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building) Certificate, or NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) diploma.

Professionally Qualified Person white CSCS card

To apply for a PQP card, applicants must be an appropriate member of a CSCS-approved professional body. This includes being a member and fellow of the CIOB, a registered member of the Architects Registration Board (ARB), and an accredited member of the Institute of Conservation (Icon).

To see whether your professional body membership is on the list of CSCS-approved bodies, please view the full list of accepted memberships on the PQP CSCS card page.

Regardless of which type of white CSCS card you want to obtain, you will also need to successfully complete the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Health, Safety, and Environment (HS&E) test for managers and professionals or the alternative CIC (Construction Industry Council) Health and Safety Test.

How do you get a CSCS white card?

Whether you want to obtain your AQP or PQP white CSCS card, you’re just a few steps away from achieving this goal! Find out how below.

Obtain relevant qualification or membership

To apply for an AQP card, you must possess the relevant high-level academic qualification, such as a HND or HNC.

To do this, you’ll need to attend a higher and further education college, so you must have previously achieved the necessary secondary school grades to be accepted onto this type of course.

Alternatively, to obtain your PQP card, you should ensure you possess a valid membership type for a CSCS-approved professional body.

A each CSCS-approved professional body will have their own membership requirements based on your current employment or education status and experience, it’s worth discussing your aspirations with them directly to discover the best route to membership for you.

Once you’ve achieved the required qualification or membership, you will also need to successfully complete the CITB HS&E test for managers and professionals or the alternative CIC Health and Safety Test before you can apply for your desired white CSCS card.

Apply online with CSCS

Once you’ve become a member of a CSCS-approved professional body or have achieved one of the accepted qualifications, you can apply for the relevant white CSCS card online.

Either log into your existing account or register as a new user, then find and fill in the relevant application form along with the necessary proof of your eligibility.

For AQP card applications, you must provide proof that you hold an accepted qualification, whereas PQP card applications should include proof that you hold current membership of the professional body at the accepted level.

This proof should show the membership certificate for the current calendar year, both sides of the membership card also with the current calendar year, and an up-to-date letter or email from the professional body confirming membership for the same year.

They’ll also require proof of receipt of payment for your membership for the same year alongside a dated screenshot of your current membership from your professional body’s website. If your membership isn’t renewed on time or is revoked, you could have your PQP card revoked without notice.

You’ll also need to provide CSCS with a passport-style photo of yourself and proof that you passed the necessary CITB or CIC health and safety test. The final step required for all CSCS cards is to then pay an application fee of £36.

Please bear in mind, however, that white CSCS card application requirements may vary according to your specific circumstances, so contact CSCS directly for more tailored and up-to-date guidance.

Renewing a CSCS white card in the future

The CSCS has provided limited information regarding the renewal of AQP white CSCS cards using IA.

Instead, they recommend using their card finder tool to search for your specific qualification and find out whether it can be used to obtain your white CSCS card.

As mentioned previously, a PQP white CSCS card cannot be renewed, so you’ll need to apply for a new one instead.

Eager to obtain your green CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card, but unsure whether you have the necessary qualifications, experience, or skills?

Regardless of whether you’re completely new to the construction industry, an employer has asked for evidence of your labouring skills and training, or your current green CSCS card has expired and you need a new one, the knowledgeable team at SB Skills Solutions can help.

These cards are essential for all individuals carrying out labouring duties on a construction site as they are used to prove to contactors that the holder possesses the relevant training, skills, and health and safety knowledge to work safely and effectively in this type of role.

Below, we explain more about the role of a green CSCS card for labourers, how you can apply for one, and whether the recent changes to the way in which some CSCS cards are renewed after 2024 will affect you.

What is a CSCS Green Card?

A CSCS labourer card, also known more commonly as a green CSCS card, can be applied for by workers that have successfully completed the relevant training to work safely and competently in a wide range of entry-level, general labour positions on a construction site.

Valid for five years, green CSCS cards are seen as essential certification if you work in any kind of labouring environment performing physical duties, including both building construction and destruction.

Some common job roles for individuals with green CSCS cards include general labourers, site cleaners, groundworkers, and demolition workers.

If you don’t hold a valid green CSCS card, then you may be denied entry to a construction site. This is because many employers and construction sites still require workers to hold a valid CSCS card – even though it’s not a legal requirement.

Obtaining a green CSCS card is therefore a great way to get involved in the construction industry and can be used as a stepping stone to help you achieve a higher-level card and more job opportunities.

How do you get a CSCS Green Card?

Getting a green CSCS card involves just two simple steps – obtaining the necessary training and certification and then heading online to apply.

Achieve the required training and certification

Before you can even begin the application process for a green CSCS card, you must ensure that you possess the relevant training, experience, and qualification for the construction job role you are applying for.

To be eligible to apply for your labourer green CSCS card, you will need to pass the necessary training and certification.

This training isn’t offered by CSCS and must therefore be provided by either a college of further education, training centre, or Jobcentre Plus.

According to CSCS, green card applicants should hold either:

Level 1 (Scotland Level 4) Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

Scottish Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate

or have passed the NOCN (National Open College Network)/CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety (F/618/0738) unit.

The Level 1 award was specifically created for labourers wanting to achieve a CSCS card.

However, there are alternative courses to this Level 1 award that CSCS will also accept if you want to apply for your green CSCS card.

It’s important to bear in mind, however, that alternative qualifications with an expiration date can be used only once.

As a result, you will need to retake them in the future when your green CSCS card expires after five years and you want to apply for a new one.

These alternative training courses are also provided by colleges of further education, training centres, and Jobcentre Plus’s.

There’s a long list of required courses that you can choose between, each with a different awarding organisation, course lifetime, and method of delivery (classroom or online).

Some of the accepted courses include:

CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Health and Safety Awareness Course

NOCN Health and Safety Awareness in Construction course

NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) Site Safety Awareness course

On top of holding one of these qualifications, all green CSCS card applicants must also pass the CITB health, safety, and environment (HS&E) test for operatives.

At SB Skills Solutions, we provide comprehensive training for the NPORS Site Safety Awareness course.

This course covers everything from defining and recognising occupational hazards and risks to understanding the legislated responsibilities of companies and how to reduce environmental impact.

If you’d like to find out more about the required training for obtaining your green CSCS card or you have a question regarding the assessment availability and pricing of any of our training courses, please don’t hesitate to contact the professional team at SB Skills Solutions today.

Apply online with CSCS

Once you’ve obtained one of the required qualifications, you can only apply for your green CSCS card by heading online to the official CSCS website.

Once you’ve logged in or registered for a new account, you’ll need to complete the online application form for the labourer CSCS card.

Alongside filling in this form, you will also need to provide a scanned copy of your certificate of one of the accepted qualifications as well as the test ID number from the top of your CITB HS&E test pass certificate.

Alternatively, you must provide proof of either registration to complete a qualification or professional body membership.

You will also be asked to prove your identity using either a passport or a driving licence and pay the CSCS card application fee via debit or credit card.

You may also need to include details regarding your current employment and a passport-size photo.

Please bear in mind, however, that these requirements may vary depending on your specific circumstances.

If you’re unsure how to apply for your green CSCS card, we recommend contacting CSCS directly for the most up-to-date guidance and clarification.

CSCS Green Card renewals after 2024

Is your existing green CSCS card about to expire?

As these cards are only valid for five years, you may be wondering how and when you can renew. CSCS state that these cards actually can’t be renewed – instead, you’ll simply need to apply for a new labourer card.

You can apply for a new labourer card online in the same way that you initially applied for your first green CSCS card.

You must start a new application instead of a renewal as the requirements to obtain this type of card are complex.

This is because there are numerous approved routes to achieving this type of card – including lifetime qualifications as well as training courses that must be renewed every few years.

As a result, the renewal process wouldn’t be the same for everyone that holds this type of card.

Concerned about whether recent changes to the CSCS card renewal process will impact your eligibility to apply for a new green CSCS card?

Fortunately, the recent changes made to the CSCS card renewal process (workers will no longer be allowed to renew their CSCS cards using Industry Accreditation (IA) after 2024) don’t affect labourer card holders.

These changes will only affect current IA card holders (typically, blue, gold or black CSCS card holders) that want to continue renewing their CSCS card after 2024.

Based on guidance from the CLC (Construction Leadership Council), IA CSCS cards that have been issued from January 1 2020 are set to expire on December 31 2024 and won’t be permitted to be replaced using IA.

While previously, IA allowed workers to receive recognition of their skills from the strength of an employers’ recommendation, they must now possess the relevant qualification or accreditation to ensure that they meet industry requirements and can competently and safely perform their role on the construction site.

Following these changes, this means current IA card holders will need to achieve a recognised qualification to apply for a new CSCS card, such as a relevant NVQ (National Vocational Qualification), SVQ (Scottish Vocational Qualification), apprenticeship, or an equivalent accreditation, like a higher national certificate or higher national diploma..

If you fall into the category of being an IA card holder without a recognised and accepted qualification for applying for a new CSCS card, then rest assured that our experienced team can help.

At SB Skills Solutions, we’ve helped countless construction industry workers achieve a wide range of qualifications and work-based NVQs starting at Level 2 and going all the way up to Level 7.

If you believe that your career in the construction industry could be impacted by the recent changes made to the way in which your CSCS card can be renewed, why not contact our professional team today?

By taking into account your level of experience as well as your skills and knowledge in your chosen role, our fully qualified trainers and assessors can help you to understand which qualifications you need and the best way to obtain them.

Can green CSCS card be upgraded to a higher level?

Yes, once you obtain your green CSCS card, you can always upgrade later to a higher level to meet your career goals.

While the green CSCS card is aimed at entry-level roles in the construction industry, other cards exist that align with your qualification, skills, and experience.

This includes the blue CSCS card (also known as the skilled workers card) which is aimed at skilled workers – those with special skills, training, and knowledge.

This also includes the more advanced gold CSCS card which is used to demonstrate that the holder has an even higher degree of capability and experience in their field of work.

However, in order to apply for these more advanced cards and progress your career in a way that works for you, you will need to meet the specific requirements.

For example, upgrading from a green CSCS card to a blue CSCS card would require the successful completion of either a Level 2 NVQ or SVQ, apprenticeship, or an equivalent qualification.

What can SB Skills do for your labourers?

At SB Skills Solutions, we provide national training, delivering CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme), NPORS, ITSSAR (Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register), in-house, NVQ, and Health and Safety Courses to many different industries, including the construction industry.

We work with both individuals as well as companies to help them achieve the necessary training and qualifications to further their career in the construction industry.

This includes supporting labourers who work on road surfacing, landscaping, and building construction projects.

Contact SB Skills Solutions today

Regardless of whether you’re seeking independent training to pursue a career in the construction industry or you want to upskill a group of your employees at once, SB Skills Solutions can assist.

Fortunately, our team of knowledgeable and experienced instructors can help you to achieve the required qualification to apply for your green CSCS card.

Alternatively, we can also help you to work towards applying for a higher-level card, such as the blue CSCS skilled worker card, if you already have your green CSCS card and want to upskill or move roles within the construction industry.

To do this, we provide assessment services for an extensive selection of NVQ qualifications, alongside our wide range of health and safety courses, including the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, that workers must also hold if they want to obtain any CSCS card.

If you’d like to find out more about the different training courses and qualifications available through SB Skills Solutions, or you’re not sure which course would be best to help you obtain your green CSCS card, just ask.
