What is a ride-on roller?
A ride-on roller is a piece of heavy machinery used in the construction industry to compact the ground and leave a smooth and level finish.
It is the employer’s duty to ensure that anyone working for them that will be using heavy machinery like a ride-on roller has received adequate training to do so safely and competently.
What is on the course?
Our ride-on roller training course aims to provide candidates with all the theory and practical training that they require to operate a ride-on roller confidently and safely.
Course Objective
The aim of the course is to give learners the practical operating skills, safety awareness and theoretical knowledge required to operate a Ride-on Roller safely and competently.
Training combines classroom-based theory with practical machine operation and assessment.
By the end of the course, learners should be able to prepare, operate, manoeuvre, compact with and safely shut down a Ride-on Roller while following appropriate site procedures.
What You’ll Learn
During the course, learners will cover:
- The operator’s responsibilities and relevant health and safety requirements
- The purpose and applications of Ride-on Rollers
- Identification of the machine’s main components and controls
- Manufacturer’s operating instructions and safety information
- Pre-use and operational safety checks
- Correct mounting and dismounting procedures
- Starting and stopping the machine safely
- Travelling and manoeuvring the roller
- Working safely in confined areas
- Identifying site hazards and exclusion zones
- Working around pedestrians and other plant
- Awareness of underground services and overhead obstructions
- Compaction in straight lines and around radii
- Compacting alongside supported and unsupported edges
- Maintaining stability and control
- Correct parking, isolation and shutdown procedures
- Identifying and reporting faults and defects
Both theoretical knowledge and practical operating ability will be assessed.
Training Bodies
We can provide a ride-on roller course accredited by the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) or the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS), depending on your specific requirements.
We also offer in-house training for those that have very bespoke training requirements.
Courses Available
We offer courses accredited by the following competence schemes:
Course durations and tests will depend on which awarding body you require:
CPCS A31 Ride-on Roller – The Construction Plant Competence Scheme is the most widely recognised accreditation scheme in the construction industry. The CPCS A31 route is suitable for operators who require CPCS certification for working within the construction industry. The A31 Ride on Roller course from CPCS will reward a red trained operator card on completion, enabling candidates to go on and undertake the relevant Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ to enable them to obtain a blue competence card.
NPORS Ride-on Roller – National Plant Operators Registration Scheme provides an industry-recognised alternative for plant operators. The appropriate certification route will depend on the learner’s experience, employer requirements and whether an NPORS Construction Plant Competence Scheme card is required.
On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a Red Competency Card which is valid for 2 years. In that time delegates will be required to complete the relevant Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ in order to update their card to a Blue Competency Card.
In-House – In-house training can be provided for employers who require operator training specifically for their own workplace or equipment.
Course content can be adapted to reflect the machinery, working environment and risks encountered within your organisation.
Not sure whether you need CPCS, NPORS or in-house training? Speak to the SB Skills team and we’ll help you select the most suitable route.
Who Should Attend?
We offer ride-on roller training for people of all levels of ability, get in touch with our team to discuss your requirements in more detail.
We offer comprehensive training courses for novices, as well as 1-day courses for more experienced operators who need to formalise their skills and knowledge with a qualification.
Either novice operators who need a full novice course or experienced ride-on roller operators requiring a 1 day practical and theory test.
Experienced operators need only undertake the Technical Test (theory and practical elements), however, familiarisation training is recommended. Please call us on 016955 58420 for details.
What will participants learn?
The contents of our ride-on roller courses will vary slightly depending on the candidate’s existing knowledge and experience.
Our courses cover both theory and practical elements of working with ride-on rollers.
Candidates will be given a general overview of what a ride-on roller is used for and the regulations and legislation governing them.
They will also be given extensive health and safety training, both theory and practical. This will include health and safety regulations, how to operate the ride-on roller safely, important health and safety checks, how to safely mount and dismount the roller, and identifying hazards.
It will also cover how to operate the roller effectively, including manoeuvring in tight spaces and compacting in straight lines.
Course Duration
Course duration depends on the learner’s previous operating experience, ability and chosen certification route.
Novice learners may require several days of training to develop the required practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
Experienced operators who can demonstrate sufficient current operating experience may be suitable for a shorter course or experienced-worker assessment.
Contact SB Skills before booking and we’ll recommend the most appropriate route.
