The CPCS Appointed Person training course is a five-day course aimed at those that will take responsibility for lifting operations. The course is accredited by the CPCS, and it culminates in the candidate being given a CPCS trained operator card, showing that they have knowledge of safe operating systems and procedures that comply with health and safety regulations.

The course is suitable for individuals looking to enhance their own skill set, as well as for groups of employees and other groups. There are entry requirements for this course, which culminates in a one day test at the end of the course.

At SB Skills we offer the CPCS Appointed Person training course, as well as a wide range of other CPCS accredited training courses, and courses from boards including NPORS. You can view and enquire about any of our courses on our website or call us on 01695 558420 and speak to one of our team with any questions or queries you have about our courses and services.

Participant Requirements

The A61 Appointed Person Training course requires that any participant has a CITB health, safety and environment test, which must have been passed no more than two years before the course completion date.

It is recommended that participants have the skills to meet the 7121 Safe Use Of Cranes standard, and because it will be necessary to read manufacturer manuals and safety warnings, all candidates should display a good understanding of written and spoken English. The participant should be comfortable working at height, because of the nature of the work as well as the content of the course.

What Are The Main Responsibilities Of An Appointed Person?

The exact responsibilities of an appointed person vary according to the job and company they work for. Typically, however, an appointed person will be the person responsible for carrying out risk assessments, for choosing the correct crane and lifting accessories, and to assess site conditions. These responsibilities mean that the course is typically suited to those with experience in lifting skills and crane operation.

Who Should Take The Appointed Person Course

The A61 appointed person course is primarily geared towards managers and supervisors that will oversee the operation of cranes and other lifting equipment. Operators may also take the course, especially if they wish to show a broader range of competencies and knowledge for a relevant job role.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to provide candidates with a CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card). This card shows that the holder has the skills required to safely and successfully complete the work required, and it can lead on to the successful acquisition of the blue operator’s card. It ensures that the card holder can conduct and agree risk assessments, determine the safety of using a lift, and that they are capable of choosing and operating the correct equipment. The card holder will understand the responsibilities of an Appointed Person.
