What is an Excavation Marshal–Banksperson?
An Excavation Marshal–Banksperson works with an excavator operator during digging operations. Their role includes guiding the machine into position, maintaining clear communication with the operator, observing the excavation activity and helping to manage hazards around the working area.
The role is particularly relevant where excavation takes place near underground services or where the operator needs guidance to carry out the work in line with the site’s safe system of work.
Course Objective
The NPORS N027 course aims to give participants the knowledge and practical skills to carry out excavation marshalling duties safely. Participants learn how to prepare for excavation work, agree signals with the operator, choose a safe marshalling position and monitor the dig while staying clear of the machine’s danger zone.
The course also covers the importance of following the employer’s risk assessment, method statement and emergency arrangements.
