What is a 360° excavator?

A 360° excavator is a tracked excavator. It is heavy machinery that is used when there is little or no room for movement around the site. The digger head can be rotated in a full circle, thanks to the use of tracks rather than wheels.
While these vehicles are highly manoeuvrable, their power and heavy parts means that they also have the potential to cause accidents and injuries. It is important as a site owner that you provide a safe working environment.
This includes ensuring that all operators have had full 360 excavator training on the safe use of these and other excavators they will use.

Course Objective

The objective of 360 degrees excavator training is to ensure that operators know how to safely and effectively use the machinery: 360 Excavator – Below 10 tonne & Above 10 tonne. Excavators are large and, by their very nature, they have the potential to cause damage and injury.
Course participants will learn how to safely use the machinery and work towards receiving certification from the appropriate industry body.

The course will teach candidates Health and safety, pre-start checks, controls, dangers, safety on getting on and off and all activities required to be a 360 excavator operator. The 360 excavator training course is both theory and practical based training with a test/assessment.

Course Duration

The 360 excavator/digger course may take between 1-10 days depending on the experience level of the delegate. Typically, these are:

10 Day – Novice Course

2-5 Day – Experienced Worker Course (for those with no previous certification)

1 Day – Experienced Worker Tests / Refresher Course

Participant Requirements

It is essential that all delegates have a good working knowledge of written and verbal English, because the training we offer combines both theory and practical elements.

Who Should Attend?

360 excavators are versatile and useful machines used primarily in construction. The size and power of the machinery means that it has the potential to cause harm to employees, visitors, and other third parties, as well as cause expensive damage. 360 digger training ensures that the operators know how to safely use and maintain the machinery, therefore eliminating potential dangers and hazards.

Excavator training is essential for novices and experienced workers operating 360 excavators and diggers. Whether they use the excavator on a daily basis, or on an occasional basis, they need to know how to do so without putting people at risk. Supervisors and managers can also benefit from 360-degree Excavator training so that they can ensure work is completed in a safe manner.

What Will Participants Learn?

The 360-degree excavator training course in Lancashire includes both theory and practical elements. Delegates will be taught the latest legislation and regulations governing the use of this type of machinery, as well as a general overview of site safety.
They will be taught how to analyse the site and terrain to ensure that they use the proper machinery and attachments, how to operate the digger, and how to complete shutdown of the excavator.

Delegates will also be taught to safely change attachments and will learn how to prepare the excavator for taking it on the public highway.

Health and safety regulations and legislation before spending time on the machinery

How to conduct pre-start checks of the 360 machine prior to operating

How to operate the excavator safely

Understanding of roles and responsibilities when operating the machinery on site

Correctly mounting and dismounting the equipment

Operating the machine on varied ground , i.e. flat, rough and undulated

Going up and down slopes with correct operating

Learn how to define a hazard and where they are found i.e. underground apparatus and overhead cables

Excavations in varied ground types

Trench work and box excavations

Grading, levelling & spreading

Working with other plant when loading them with material and spoil

Change and operate ancillary equipment and attachments

Loading materials on various vehicles, hoppers, dumpers and wagons

Shut down procedures

Training Bodies

We offer training courses accredited by the following training bodies:

CPCS – The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) is the biggest and most widely recognised body. Some companies require that their operators specifically have a CPCS card before employment. CPCS offers a competence card scheme. Initially, an operator will be awarded a red card. They can work towards receiving a red card within two years of receiving their blue card. We offer A58, A59, A59A and A59B CPCS excavator training at our training sites in Burscough, Ormskirk.

NPORS – The National Plant Operators Registration(NPORS) is a widely recognised card scheme across the Construction, Industrial, Utilities, Warehousing and Distribution, Agricultural, Ports and Marine sectors. The NPORS 360 Excavator – N202 course aims to provide the candidate with a thorough practical and theory training in operating 360 Degree Excavator in order to enable the candidate to pass the NPORS Theory and Practical Tests. Upon passing the tests, the operator will get an NPORS traditional operator card or if they have in date touch screen on completion they can opt in for the New NPORS CSCS logo card.

In-House – Our in-house training course for the 360 excavators follows the same training schedule, however if a client would like a bespoke option i.e with a particular attachment then this can be built into the course. The inhouse is still done by highly qualified NPORS and CPCS instructor is just at the end of the course you will gain a certificate of competency. The certificate is normally used for people who need to cover for insurance, competency and to use on own sites.

What is a Slinger Signaller?

The slinger signaller plays an important role in keeping construction sites, and other settings that use cranes and lifting equipment safe. The role of the slinger signaller is to communicate clearly with crane operators from ground level, giving them directions to help them lift and move their load safely and efficiently.

What is on the course?

The N402 NPORS/A40 CPCS Slinger Signaller training course teaches learners everything they need to know to work in a role as a slinger signaller.

The slinger/signaller must be able to direct the crane safely and efficiently, during loading and lifting operations, this is done by using special hand signals. These are standard signals, which follow BS 7121 code of practice for the safe use of cranes.

Health and Safety legislation covering safety signs and signals also includes essential hand signals for use on construction sites. The slinger signaller must make precise signals, which the crane operator can easily understand. Therefore, it is important that these signals are agreed upon with the crane operator before operations commence.

In certain weather conditions, where visibility is affected by heavy rain, fog or mist, then the slinger signaller may be able to use batons and high vis gloves as a substitute for hand signals.

Another alternative is the use of two-way radios, which are widely used. Radios are commonly used by Slinger Signallers that work with tower cranes where the line of sight is often lost.

Part of the slinger signaller’s role is having the authority to halt crane operations if they deem that the conditions are too hazardous to continue working.

What is the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Slinger Signaller?

The Slinger Signaller NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Lifting Operations is a work-based qualification that recognises the skills and competence of those already working in a role as a slinger signaller.

A slinger signaller, sometimes also referred to as a slinger banksman, plays an important part in the safe operation of cranes or other lifting equipment on a construction site. The slinger signaller supervises the crane operator at work and provides direction either verbally or through hand signals to ensure the crane is operated safely.

This qualification comprises four mandatory competency-based units. The units cover general health and safety, productive working practices, attaching and preparing suspended loads, and guiding and positioning suspended loads.

Who is this qualification for?

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations -Slinger/Signaller (Construction) qualification has been developed for achievement in a real workplace environment which means you need to be employed to undertake this qualification.

This qualification enables you, the learner, to demonstrate and recognise your skills, knowledge and understanding and to demonstrate your competence in a real workplace environment so you can work as a Slinger/Signaller within the construction industry.

You will be assessed against a set of performance and knowledge statements which have been derived from National Occupational Standards for your occupational area.

You will be assessed by an occupationally competent and qualified assessor whose job is to work with you and help you complete your qualification. This qualification supports the learner to attain enabling, fundamental and transferable practical skills with associated underpinning knowledge.

Completion of this NVQ will allow you to apply for a CPCS Competence card.

Mandatory Units (All to be completed)

Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace

Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace

Slinging Signalling and the movement of suspended loads in the Workplace

Why take the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Slinger/Signaller?

Completing the Slinger Signaller NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations is an excellent way for those working as slinger signallers to consolidate their knowledge and prove their competence in their role with a nationally recognised qualification.

Those who hold a CPCS or NPORS Red Trained Operator Card will need to upgrade this within 2 years of receiving it to a CPCS or NPORS Blue Competent Operator Card. Completing this NVQ is the only route to applying for a Blue Competent Operator Card.

Many individuals working as slinger signallers have completed this level 2 NVQ to improve their employability and progress their career.

What are the entry requirements?

As this is a competency-based qualification, applicants must already be employed in a role where they work as a slinger signaller.

They should also already have a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card in their possession.

Candidates must provide evidence of their competence in carrying out the duties of a slinger signaller to pass the NVQ, so they must already be experienced and confident in their role.

How long does it take to complete and what does the course involve?

This is a competency-based qualification that can be completed whilst you’re at work alongside your job.

To pass the NVQ you must provide proof of your competence in each of the course’s criteria. The evidence you provide can come in a variety of forms including:

Completed worksheets.

Witness testimonies.

A written record of conversations.

Method Statements

Lift Plans

Audio or video files.

All the evidence you gather should be compiled into a portfolio for submission and assessment.

The qualification can usually be completed in 6-12 months, but this timescale does vary from one applicant to the next depending on how much time they can commit to it.

How is the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Slinger Signaller assessed?

This qualification is assessed solely on the portfolio of evidence submitted by the individual.

When you first sign up for the Level 2 slinger signaller NVQ you will be assigned an occupationally competent assessor who will provide you with guidance throughout completing the qualification and help you with gathering evidence when required to do so.

Most of your communication with your assessor will take place by telephone or email, but they may also visit you on-site to observe you at work and help with gathering evidence. Once you and your assessor are satisfied that your portfolio is complete you will submit it internally for assessment. You will then either be marked as competent or not yet competent.

What will you gain from this qualification?

There are many benefits to taking this level 2 NVQ if you currently work as a slinger signaller in controlling lifting operations.

Completing the qualification can help individuals to consolidate their knowledge of best practices to carry out their role with skill and confidence. It is also a gateway to applying for your Blue Competent Operator industry card with either the CPCS or NPORS.

Possession of both the NVQ and a Competent Operator Card can help to improve your employability and progress your career in the industry.

Once you have completed the level 2 NVQ, you also have the option to keep developing your skills and knowledge and go on to take another NVQ at a higher level.

What is a Forward Tipping Dumper?

The forward tipping dumper has been a critical component in site maintenance and construction work for 30 years or more. In fact, in this time, the basic concept of the machinery has barely changed. Thankfully, however, there have been improvements to elements like steering and strength of the dumper. New models of dumper, as well as extra and additional attachments have also been launched.

The power of the machinery, as well as the ways in which it is used, means that there are numerous potential dangers associated with this type of vehicle. There are dangers associated with the loading and unloading of the dumper bucket. There are also dangers associated with driving and moving the machine, and even acts like climbing on and off the vehicle can be hazardous if attempted incorrectly. Without safe and efficient use of the dumper, it can lead to accidents and potential injuries.

Courses Available

We offer courses accredited by the following competence schemes:

Course durations and tests will depend on which awarding body you require:

CPCS – The Construction Plant Competence Scheme is the most widely recognised accreditation scheme in the construction industry. Many organisations require that operators have CPCS cards, as part of their company policies. The A09 Forward Tipping Dumper course from CPCS will reward a red trained operator card on completion, enabling candidates to go on and undertake the relevant Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ to enable them to obtain a blue competence card.

NPORS – National Plant Operators Registration Scheme is a widely recognised accreditation specialising in the construction sector. On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a Red Competent Card which is valid for 2 years. In that time delegates will be required to complete the relevant Level 2 Plant Operations NVQ in order to update their card to a Blue Competency Card.

In-House – If you need to provide additional safety elements to your employees, we can customise a training course to include all the elements and components that you require.
