What does the forklift training course involve?

The forklift training course (also referred to as FLT training) teaches the learners how to operate a forklift safely and how they should carry out various safety checks and procedures on the machine.

They are also taught how to understand the capabilities, functions and all safety aspects of each machine.

The learner has a final assessment which comprises of a theory test followed by a practical test this is all set out by the awarding body.

Course Objective

The course teaches our delegates how to operate a Forklift safely and how they should carry out various safety checks/procedures on the machine. They are also taught how to understand the capabilities, functions and and all safety aspects of each machine.

Choose the right level of forklift training

Novice operator training

Designed for people with little or no previous forklift operating experience. The course introduces learners to the truck’s controls, operating principles, safety procedures and practical handling techniques.

Experienced operator training

Suitable for operators who already have practical forklift experience but have not previously completed recognised formal training. Existing ability will need to be confirmed before the course is booked.

Refresher training

Designed for previously trained operators who need to refresh their knowledge, correct unsafe habits or demonstrate that they remain competent.

Refresher training or reassessment may be particularly appropriate following an accident or near miss, a lengthy break from operating, a change of truck or workplace, or concerns about an operator’s performance.

Refresher Training is a requirement and is vital in maintaining operator skill levels and preventing them from slipping into bad habits. Research proves that safe, skilled operators are also the most productive.

There is no fixed deadline, but Refresher Training is normally carried out every 3–5 years but may be required sooner where operators are slipping into bad habits.

What does forklift training cover?

The exact content will depend on the truck category and the learner’s experience, but training will generally include:

• Operator responsibilities and workplace safety
• Relevant legislation and guidance
• Pre-use inspections and defect reporting
• Understanding the truck’s controls and capabilities
• Stability, load centres and rated capacity
• Safe starting, stopping and manoeuvring
• Picking up, transporting and placing loads
• Stacking and de-stacking
• Operating in confined or busy working areas
• Safe parking and shutdown procedures

Learners complete a theory assessment and practical operating test. Successful candidates receive certification confirming the forklift category and training completed.

Course Duration

The FLT training course length varies depending on the level of experience of the attendee.

As a general guide:

• Novice training: usually three to five days
• Experienced operator training: duration confirmed following an assessment of experience
• Refresher training: usually at least one day, depending on the operator’s needs

Further Development

The awarding body recommends that refreshers are taken regularly, to make sure that all FLT operators are working to correct standards and to correct any bad habits the operator may have picked up.
