What is a plant machinery marshal?
A plant machinery marshal helps guide the movement of plant around a work site. The role involves communicating clearly with operators, checking the work area and helping to keep people clear of moving machinery.
This course focuses on the responsibilities of the marshal. It does not train learners to operate the plant machinery they guide.
Course objective
The NPORS N133 course develops the knowledge and practical skills needed to marshal plant machinery safely. Training covers:
- The marshal’s role and responsibilities on site
- Common hazards associated with moving plant
- Checking the work area and identifying hazards
- Choosing and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Hand signals and other methods of communication
- Identifying blind spots and agreeing a safe system of communication with the operator
- Setting up exclusion zones and keeping pedestrians clear
- Guiding machinery forwards and in reverse, including in confined areas
- Maintaining visual contact and knowing when to stop a movement
- Environmental considerations and end-of-work procedures

Entry requirements
You do not need previous plant marshalling experience to enquire about the course. Learners should be able to understand instructions and communicate clearly with the machinery operator. We’ll confirm any site-specific PPE or other requirements when arranging your booking.
Who should attend?
This course is for anyone who needs to guide the movement of plant machinery as part of their work, including construction and civil engineering site personnel.

Assessment and certification
Learners complete the relevant NPORS assessment. The card available after a successful assessment depends on the registration route and whether the learner meets any additional requirements for an NPORS CSCS card. We’ll confirm the suitable route before booking.
