A CSCS card gives you credibility and demonstrates your qualifications, role, and level of experience to potential employers and clients alike in the construction industry.
Acquiring a CSCS card is possible for people with all different levels of skill and experience, here’s how to go about getting a CSCS card.
What is a CSCS card?
CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme, a scheme run by the Construction Industry Training Board.
If you want to work in construction, then you will need a CSCS card to demonstrate that you have the minimum level of competence required to safely work in the construction industry.
CDM Regulations require employers to ensure that employees are trained to a standard that allows them to work safely. CSCS is one of the best and most widely recognised option.
There are several types of CSCS cards to reflect different skill levels and occupations. The type of card you qualify for will depend on your qualifications, role, and experience.
The most basic type and entry level CSCS card is the Green Labourer card.
What are the requirements for obtaining a CSCS card?
A CSCS card can be obtained in several different ways, depending on your qualifications and experience.
According to the Official CSCS website, to apply for a CSCS card you must prove you have the appropriate construction related qualifications and training for the job you do. In most cases, you must pass the appropriate CITB Health Safety and Environment Test within the previous two years.
The type of CITB Health Safety and Environment Test you need to pass will depend on the job you do and the type of card you are applying for.
If you don’t yet have an NVQ or any experience on the job, then you can complete any one-day health and safety course recognised by CSCS in order to qualify for an entry level Green CSCS card.
How do I get a CSCS card?
The steps you should take to get your CSCS card will depend on your level of experience.
If you are just starting your career in construction, then you may want to take one or more of the following before applying for your CSCS card.
- A CSCS test
- An NVQ
