What is the Level 6 Construction Contracting Operations NVQ?

The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management is a competence-based qualification for experienced professionals responsible for managing commercial, technical or operational activities within construction.

Rather than teaching candidates how to perform a new role, the NVQ assesses the skills, knowledge and experience they already use in their day-to-day work. Candidates must therefore be actively working in a suitable position and able to provide evidence of their responsibilities.

The qualification is available through five pathways:

  • Estimating
  • Buying
  • Planning
  • Surveying
  • General

The correct pathway will depend on the candidate’s job role, responsibilities and the type of workplace evidence they can provide.

Course Objective

The objective of this Level 6 NVQ is to confirm that candidates can competently manage construction contracting operations within their chosen specialist pathway.

Depending on the selected pathway and units, candidates may be required to demonstrate their ability to:

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Plan and organise construction contracting operations
  • Monitor progress against agreed programmes and requirements
  • Manage project information and documentation
  • Apply health, safety and welfare requirements
  • Promote environmental and sustainable working practices
  • Analyse technical, commercial or operational information
  • Manage costs, resources and procurement activities
  • Identify and respond to risks and changes
  • Provide advice and support to relevant stakeholders
  • Maintain quality standards and working procedures
  • Review and improve their own professional performance

The precise units and evidence requirements will be confirmed during the initial assessment.

Available Pathways

Estimating

The Estimating pathway is suitable for professionals responsible for preparing tenders, calculating project costs, assessing risks and producing estimates for construction work.

Buying

The Buying pathway is intended for candidates involved in purchasing materials, plant or subcontracted services, managing suppliers and supporting procurement activities.

Planning

The Planning pathway is suitable for professionals who develop, maintain and monitor construction programmes, schedules and project resource requirements.

Surveying

The Surveying pathway is designed for candidates undertaking commercial or quantity surveying responsibilities, including cost control, valuations, contractual matters and financial reporting.

General

The General pathway is suitable for experienced professionals whose responsibilities cover a broader range of construction contracting operations and do not sit entirely within one specialist pathway.

How is the NVQ Assessed?

This is a work-based qualification, so candidates are assessed using evidence from their current role. There are no traditional classroom examinations.

Following an initial assessment, an assessor will create an individual assessment plan and explain the evidence required. Evidence may include:

  • Workplace documents and records
  • Reports, plans, programmes and schedules
  • Estimates, tenders or procurement documentation
  • Photographs or video evidence
  • Witness testimonies
  • Professional discussions with the assessor
  • Written statements or reflective accounts
  • Remote or workplace observations
  • Questions used to confirm occupational knowledge

All evidence must be authentic, current and relevant to the candidate’s chosen pathway. Commercially sensitive information can be appropriately redacted before being submitted.

Course Duration

The time required to complete the Level 6 NVQ will depend on the candidate’s experience, availability and ability to provide suitable workplace evidence.

An individual assessment plan will be agreed at the beginning of the programme. Candidates who already hold a strong range of relevant evidence may progress more quickly, while others may require additional time to demonstrate every part of the qualification.

Assessment is arranged flexibly to minimise disruption to work commitments.

Who Should Attend?

This qualification is suitable for experienced construction professionals working in roles such as:

  • Contracts Manager
  • Commercial Manager
  • Quantity Surveyor
  • Construction Estimator
  • Construction Buyer
  • Procurement Manager
  • Construction Planner
  • Project Planner
  • Project Surveyor
  • Senior Surveyor
  • Construction Operations Manager
  • Other contracting operations management roles

Job titles vary between employers, so eligibility is based on the candidate’s actual responsibilities rather than their job title alone.

Certification

Candidates who successfully complete all required units will receive a nationally recognised Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management.

Level 6 qualifications demonstrate competence at construction management level and are broadly comparable in level to an undergraduate degree. This describes the level of the qualification and does not mean that the NVQ is an academic degree.

Black CSCS Manager Card

Completing an approved Level 6 construction management NVQ may support an application for the Black CSCS Manager Card.

Candidates must also meet all current CSCS requirements, which normally include passing the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. Card eligibility can depend on the qualification pathway and current CSCS rules, so candidates should confirm their intended route before enrolling.

Our team can provide guidance on the qualification route, but the final decision on card eligibility remains with CSCS.

After completing the qualification, candidates may progress into more senior construction, commercial or operational management roles.

Further development could include:

  • Higher-level construction management qualifications
  • Specialist commercial or contractual training
  • Health and safety management qualifications
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body
  • Continuing professional development relevant to the candidate’s role

Funding for Employers

CITB grants may be available to eligible CITB-registered employers completing approved construction NVQs. Eligibility and payment will depend on the employer, qualification and current CITB grant rules.
