What is the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Waterproof Membrane Roofing Systems?

The NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Waterproof Membrane Roofing Systems is a qualification designed to recognise the skill and competence of individuals already working in a role where they install or repair waterproof membrane roofing systems.

This qualification is comprised of three different pathways, allowing candidates to choose the pathway that is most relevant to their role and skillset.

The three pathways are:

  • Reinforced bitumen membrane roofing.
  • Single-ply membrane roofing.
  • Liquid applied membrane roofing systems.

Each pathway is comprised of six mandatory units tailored to the type of membrane roofing the candidate has chosen to specialise in. Each pathway covers the following topics:

  • General health and safety.
  • Conforming to productive working practices.
  • Moving, handling, and storing resources.
  • Preparing surfaces for installation.
  • Repairing membrane roofing systems.
  • Applying membrane roofing systems.

Who is this qualification for?

The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Waterproof Membrane Roofing Systems (Construction) qualification provides a nationally recognised qualification for those working in the construction and the built environment sector working across a broad range of areas. It is designed to assess occupational competence in the workplace where candidates are required to demonstrate skills and knowledge to a level required in the construction industry. There are 3 specialist pathways: Pathway 1: Reinforced Bitumen Membrane Roofing Pathway 2: Single Ply Membrane Roofing Pathway 3: Liquid Applied Membrane Roofing Systems

Completion of this NVQ will allow you to apply for a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card.

Pathway 1: Reinforced Bitumen Membrane Roofing (All Mandatory for Pathway 1)

  • Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
  • Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
  • Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
  • Preparing surfaces for membrane roofing systems in the workplace
  • Repairing membrane roofing systems in the workplace
  • Applying reinforced bitumen membrane systems in the workplace

Pathway 2: Single Ply Membrane Roofing (All Mandatory for Pathway 2)

  • Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
  • Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
  • Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace
  • Preparing surfaces for membrane roofing systems in the workplace
  • Repairing membrane roofing systems in the workplace
  •  Applying single ply membrane systems in the workplace

Pathway 3: Liquid Applied Membrane Roofing Systems (All Mandatory for Pathway 3)

  • Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
  • Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace

However, it is important to note that it is a work-based qualification, therefore applicants will need to already be employed in a role where they work installing waterproof membrane roofing systems to complete the qualification.

How long does it take to complete and what does the course involve?

The NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Waterproof Membrane Roofing Systems is completed by candidates in the workplace whilst on the job.

The qualification requires candidates to gather real evidence of their occupational competence in each of the course’s units and criteria.

This evidence can be gathered in several different ways including:

  • Being observed in the workplace by your assessor.
  • Witness statements.
  • Records of conversations.
  • Documentary evidence.
  • Written paperwork and reports.

The length of time that it takes to gather all the necessary evidence varies from one applicant to the next.

Generally, the NVQ takes between 6 and 12 months to complete, but this timescale really depends on how much time is dedicated to the qualification.

How is the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Waterproof Membrane Roofing Systems assessed?

This qualification is assessed purely on the quality of the personal portfolio that you submit at the end. There are no other assignments or exams to complete.

You will be assigned an occupationally competent assessor when you sign up for the NVQ. Your assessor will act as your point of contact whilst you are completing the qualification and will visit you in your workplace to observe you in your role.

There are no exams or coursework involved in this qualification. Your diploma will be assessed based on the portfolio of proof that you submit at the end.

Once you are satisfied that you have provided proof of your competence in each of the course’s units you can send it to be verified internally and then submitted.  You will then either be declared ‘competent’ and awarded the qualification, or ‘not yet competent’, in which case you will need to review your portfolio again.
