What is an NVQ?

An NVQ is a practical, work-based qualification that provides individuals who have successfully completed the course with recognition of their skills, knowledge, and competency.

NVQs can be taken at schools, colleges, and workplaces in the UK and are available in a range of levels (from 2-7) and areas.

How can an NVQ help your career?

An NVQ is designed to give individuals the skills, knowledge, and experience that they need to obtain a certain job.

They revolve around the teaching of practical skills and theory to help improve the competence and safety of candidates in the career they are pursuing.

NVQs can also be beneficial as applicants don’t need any formal qualifications to start taking these courses, they can learn skills as they earn money, and there aren’t any exams.

This type of qualification can also offer applicants a more flexible route into their chosen career or industry.

Do I need an NVQ to run a construction site?

While there are other routes to becoming a construction site manager, such as obtaining a degree in construction management or taking a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course, obtaining an NVQ can be advantageous.

One of the biggest advantages to achieving a relevant construction management NVQ at either level 4, 5, 6 or 7 is that it allows the holder of the qualification to apply for their Black CSCS Managers card. This card demonstrates that the holder possesses the necessary experience, skills, training, and competence to safely hold a management position on a construction site.

As a result, most major construction companies will only employ construction workers who hold a CSCS card for the position they want to work in.

Those wanting to work in management positions on construction sites should therefore seriously consider gaining their Black CSCS card to increase their employability and earning potential.

Possessing an NVQ in construction site management could also be essential for those who previously applied for their Black CSCS card through industry accreditation (IA).

IA is simply a type of reference provided by employers or other competent individuals to certify that the applicant can safely and competently work in a certain position within the construction industry.

However, due to new recommendations made by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), all IA CSCS cards issued from January 1, 2020, will expire on December 31, 2024.

Once these cards have expired, they won’t be able to be replaced using IA which means Black CSCS cardholders who previously obtained this card with IA will need to achieve another relevant qualification to renew.

In many cases, this means construction site managers who obtained their Black CSCS card via IA should consider applying for (and successfully completing) an NVQ Level 6 Construction Site Management course before their current card expires.

NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management

The NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and is therefore one of the highest levels available.

This course can take anywhere between four weeks and 12 months to complete.

Applicants who have greater motivation and availability typically pass faster than those with busier schedules.

Alternatively, fast-track options are also available if your Black CSCS card is expiring sooner than you thought.

Ultimately, this course is designed to assess the competency of the applicant in the construction site management role and how effectively they carry out the role’s responsibilities. It covers essential aspects of construction site management, including health, safety and welfare, leadership and management, and planning and preparation.

Not to mention, on top of allowing you to apply for your Black CSCS card, this qualification can also be used to help you become a member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). This membership can be instrumental in helping individuals in the construction industry to advance their careers.
