The NVQ Level 4 Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Supervising Lifts is a work-based, nationally recognised qualification that proves an individual’s competence in supervising lifts.

The qualification does not require any time out of work for training and can be conveniently completed on the job by gathering evidence of your knowledge and experience in each of the qualification’s units.

Who is this qualification for?

This is a work-based learning qualification that enables individuals to carry out the supervising of lifts in the Construction working environment.

Candidates must prove competent to carry out at least two of the following checks during preparation work for lifting operations: –for condition, for fit for purpose, on health and safety, on environmental or on people. Candidates must also identify, select and/or acquire and maintain at least three of the following resources: – people, plant, equipment or machinery, materials and components, sub-contractors, work and facilities waste management, utility providers.

All work must be completed following Industry recognised Safe Working Practices and in accordance with relevant legislations.

This qualification is at Level 4, although some units may be at different levels and should be taken by those who are fully trained to deal with a range of tasks and situations. The qualification consists of 8 mandatory units with a total credit value of 74 credits.

  • 210v2 – Developing and Maintaining Good Occupational Working Relationships in the Workplace
  • 531 – Supervising Lifting Operations Using Lifting Equipment in the Workplace
  • C2 – Maintaining Systems for Health, Safety, Welfare and Environmental Protection in the Workplace
  • C5 – Coordinating and Organising the Control of the Work in the Workplace
  • C7 – Allocating and Monitoring the Use of Plant, Equipment or Machinery in the Workplace
  • 708 -Maintaining the Dimensional Accuracy of the Work in the Workplace
  • C13 – Coordinating Preparation Work for Site or Lifting Operations in the Workplace
  • 713 – Allocating Work and Checking Peoples Performance in the Workplace

What are the entry requirements?

The Level 4 NVQ in Controlling Lifting Operations – Supervising Lifts is suitable for anyone who is already employed in a role in crane lifting operations. It is often taken by those working as lift supervisors or crane supervisors. There are no formal entry requirements to take this qualification. This qualification can be undertaken without any previous training or qualifications in this subject area.

How long does it take to complete and what is involved?

There is no training involved in this NVQ, instead, applicants must gather evidence of their knowledge and experience in each of the qualification’s units. This evidence can include historic evidence.

Evidence may include paperwork such as question and answer sheets, observational records, reports, records of conversations with others, and video evidence.

This NVQ is carried out in your own time, so the length of time it takes to complete depends on how much time you can commit to it and how quickly you can put together your personal portfolio for submission. Generally, the NVQ can be completed in 6 -12 months, but this timescale does vary.

How is the NVQ Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations assessed?

When you begin your NVQ you will be assigned an assessor who can help and support you through the qualification.

Most of your communications with your assessor will be done remotely by telephone or email, although they may also visit you on-site to help gather evidence for your qualification.

Once you have gathered all the necessary paperwork proof for the NVQ, you will send your portfolio to be verified internally and then submitted.

You will then be pronounced with ‘competent’ and awarded the qualification or ‘not yet competent’.
